Did you know that your liver has more functions in your body than any other organ? Every second of every minute, every day, it keeps you alive and ticking. It is most definitely a vital organ! Yet the liver is often overlooked when it comes to health and wellness self-care. In fact, medical research is still uncovering all of the jobs of this amazing, life-giving organ.
Most people know that the liver creates glucose – the only bodily chemical that gives us ENERGY! The liver utilizes glucose that comes from the carbohydrates and starches in your diet. After making glucose, the liver stores it so that you have energy whenever you need it. When it comes to metabolism, glucose is the number one carbohydrate. Every cell in the body including the brain use glucose for energy. Without energy, the body will lack get up and go to do much of anything!
In addition to synthesizing glucose, the liver creates a variety of enzymes to combat toxins in the blood. It renders toxins harmless so they can then exit the body by way of bile, which is created by the gallbladder and excreted by the liver. It also secretes digestive fluids to help break down and digest everything you eat and drink. BEFORE food goes on to feed your cells via the bloodstream, it is digested by your liver first. It’s an amazing filtration system! One of the jobs of the liver is to create hormones. Hormones are substances created by organs and glands which control physiology and behavior of the body. The liver is also responsible for breaking down fats. When working properly, the liver kills bacteria, parasites and viruses. The liver is also responsible for making use of protein – one of the building blocks of good health along with fats and carbohydrates. The liver is also and amazing storehouse of elements including iron, certain vitamins (A, B-12, D, E, K) as well as immune cells.
We live in a very toxic world. The primary source of toxins that show up in our body is the air. There are toxins in our food – especially genetically modified and non-organic foods – as well as in water. There are tens of thousands of toxic chemicals in our environment, most of which have not been tested for safety to humans (or animals)! Next time you walk into Target or another large department store, notice the smell. That new product smell? Those are chemicals off gassing from all the products and packaging in the store. Does it smell like salt water or fresh cut grass? No, it smells like chemicals. Here are other things that are flushed out and neutralized by the liver:
• Pharmaceutical drugs
• Street drugs
• Pesticides, fungicides, insecticides (if you’re not eating organic, you’re eating these)
• Food additives (chemicals)
Fortunately, the liver works 24X7, 365 days a year processing all the toxins we are exposed to as a matter of daily living.
This reality should compel us to keep our livers healthy and clean. Think of the liver as the conductor of detoxification activities in the body. Along with the kidneys, the skin, the spleen and the lungs, the liver removes many of the toxic substances from the body. When the liver stops working, toxic buildup is inevitable and in some cases, can cause death. People cannot live indefinitely without a functioning liver. Said another way, a healthy, functioning liver is one of the most important defenses in preventing disease and illness.
Remember that everything that goes in your mouth gets processed by the liver – and that includes medication. Some of the following symptoms *may* indicate an overloaded liver. Treating symptoms of any of these with prescription and over-the-counter drugs may damage an already taxed liver.
• Skin issues: eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, rashes, liver spots
• Digestive issues: irritable bowel, indigestion, bloating, weight gain
• Chronic fatigue
• Psychological issues: depression, irritability
Rather than treat the symptoms, consider finding the root cause of the condition. An overworked liver can be made right, starting with a liver cleanse. One of the theories behind a cleanse is to give the liver a break and allow it to regenerate and heal. Unlike a car turned off sitting in the garage, the liver never goes on vacation 100% of the time. However, doing a juice cleanse can go a long way towards improving liver function. In addition, specific liver-supportive and detoxifying herbs and supplements can boost the impact of a liver cleanse. Following are two cleanses that I have personally done more than once and have had good results.
A body wrap customer who was told she need to have her gallbladder removed, turned me on to Andreas Moritz’s Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush. I highly recommend reading the book of the same name. This cleanse is quite simple, especially for vegetarians or vegans. Essentially, for six days, you eat a vegan diet. In addition to a vegan diet, drink either a quart of organic apple juice daily OR take malic acid daily. The malic acid (either in the capsule or the apple juice) softens the gallstones that will be eliminated. Do either of those for six days. On the sixth day, eat your last meal at 1:30 PM. DO NOT EAT AFTER THIS!
At 6:00 PM, hold your nose and drink 8 ounces of a solution of Epsom salts and water. Repeat drinking 8 ounces of the Epsom salt solution at 7 PM. If your bowels have not been emptied by drinking the Epsom salts, at 8 PM take a 5-minute warm water enema. The goal is to empty the bowels completely before bed.
At 10 PM, mix ½ cup of cold-pressed, organic olive oil with 8 ounces of fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. (You may substitute the juice of lemon and orange if you cannot find fresh grapefruit.) DO NOT USE STORE BOUGHT JUICE! Be sure the fruit is cold before juicing, as it will make it go down much easier. I put the oil and juice in a clean glass jar and shake well. Drink it down rather quickly. You can take a breath between gulps. Don’t sip – drink! It should not take you more than a minute to finish this. After that, go to bed and sleep or listen to quiet music. If you feel the need to use the bathroom, do so. In the morning, you will likely void HUNDREDS of gallstones in various stages of formation. For more details on my experience with the amazing liver and gallbladder flush, read my blog post here. (I have done this cleanse three times as of the writing of this post.)
This is a 7-day cleanse that consists of three phases: 1. Preparation 2. Detoxification and 3. Reintroducing foods. The preparation phase consists of eating a vegan diet for 2 days. The detoxification phase consists of 3 days of liquid-only diet, which is a fresh lemon juice and maple syrup mixture. Phase 3 is the last 2 of the 7 days and consists of a vegan diet once again. All 7 days you are taking 3 herbal supplements in varying amounts, twice per day. These herbal supplements are:
DETOX Body Purifier: This is an herbal supplement that rids to the body of not only toxins but also mucus from the major organs. In addition, it purifies the blood and cleans the entire lymphatic system, our secondary waste system.
CLEANSE Intestinal Cleanser: This is an herbal supplement that tones the bowel and rids the colon of hard, encrusted fecal matter. Bowel tone is improved by providing nutrients that restore the peristaltic action of the large intestine. This formula also expels parasites from the digestive tract.
FIBER Wheat Bran and Psyllium: This product adds dietary fiber to the body and thereby cleans the gut without calories. While brushing the bowel, fiber also helps lower cholesterol. Psyllium cleans waste from the digestive tract and combats constipation.
The liver is one of the vital organs of the body. Modern life continually subjects our environment and our bodies to toxic overload, which the liver must deal with 24 hours a day. It behooves us to take as good care of our liver as we do other parts of our life. A liver cleanse can be a great starting place on the journey to a healthier liver – and life!
